The Bavarian State Mint has issued the African Wildlife Series since 1999. The first coins available were the Zambia Elephants, available in the same 1 oz gold and silver options still offered to this day. In 2004, the Zambia Elephant was rebranded within the African Wildlife Series as the Somalia Elephant.

Obverse visuals on 2023 Somalia Gold Elephant Coins include the coat of arms of Somalia. The national seal consists of a crowned shield that has a background field of horizontal lines that includes a single star set at the center. The shield is supported on either side by leopards, with crossed spears and leaves beneath the design.

Reverse features on the 2023 1 oz Gold Elephant Coin include the all-new African bush elephant design for 2023. This year’s design shows the head of the elephant in right-profile relief. Here, you can see the elephant using its trunk as a hand to pull down a branch overhead. The elephant is using its trunk to reach the leaves, some of which it is already dining on. The background field offers a view of the savanna in the distance.
